search engine optimization

Warning!

Bad things can happen to your web site following poor search engine optimization work.

Poor search engine optimization work on your web site can be worse than doing no work at all. Here's why.

Reindexing

Many search engines go months in between each major reindexing. Thus, if your optimization work is done poorly, you may stuck with poor placement for a long time. Even if you then employ a highly competent optimization firm, it can take some time before their efforts are reflected in these search engines.

Spamming

Many search engine placement and optimization firms use prohibited techniques in a foolish attempt to achieve high position for their clients' web sites. Search engines are smart. The ranking algorithms are programmed to detect such tricks as hidden text, cloaking, link farms and many others. And, when they do identify a site as attempting to improperly manipulate the rankings, most search engines will either ban or greatly penalize a web site thereafter.

Don't fall for the submission gimmicks.

Some companies advertise that they will submit your site to hundreds of thousands of search engines. Simply put, there are not hundreds of thousands of search engines in existence. Even if there were, the vast majority of traffic comes from the major search engines such as Google, MSN Live, Yahoo and AskJeeves.

Emphasis should be placed on sound HTML optimization, navigation structure and listings in prominent human directories. Remember the axiom, "Anything worth doing is worth doing well." With search engine optimization, the price of poor work can be catastrophic to your web site.
